Learning to Pray with the Psalms:   Lament and Praise

The Psalms have been the prayer book of the synagogue and church for thousands of years. There is much to learn about prayer from the Psalms. In this class, we will explore the two major types of prayer in the Psalter: lament and praise. In both lament and praise, the pray-er trusts that God cares and that God responds to the cries of his people. In situations of both grief and joy, the Psalms give us words to bring all of who we are into the presence of the God who hears.

Learning Objectives:   At the completion of this educational presentation, the participants will:

•  Be able to describe the form of prayer known as lament
•   Be able to discuss the theology behind lament and praise
•   Be able to articulate ways in which the Psalms may be used in parish nursing practice for spiritual care and support
•   Report an increase in using the Psalms as a prayer form in parish nursing practice
